Demian (Chango) Mohar
Demián “Chango” Mohar is a Mexican artist
who found in painting, object art, and
Drawing the ideal means to bear witness to
an era saturated with symbols, cultural
syncretisms and fusions, both of images
and forms that evidence the
contemporary Mexico.
In the motley of his work, we find signs
Forged by his observation, his experiences,
His culture and transit. Each one of his
pieces explore an oscillating paradox
between what is foreign and what is his
own, what is external, and what is intimate:
the city, the street vs the image and
memory.
My work is a reflection on how images,
words, colors, textures, and even the
Sounds and voices that inhabit the streets
of Mexico City impact and feed on the
collective imagination.
I seek to decipher the cultural traces of a
collectivity within a given territory and
time, within the symbiotic identity
between the individual and society.
Through graffiti, textuality, labels,
advertising, propaganda, and the public
space is the site where the cultural,
Political, social, and historical events take place
and, where traces and signs of the various
subjectivities endure.
In my work, I dive into the various visual
elements of a culture in an urban territory,
Unlike any other. I seek to create a social
and an individual portrait of the various
elements that build and deconstruct our
subjectivities, creating senses of belonging
and identity.
“I paint as one wanders in the
city: aimlessly, but drawing a
map in memory that we will
later recognize.”
Chango's work is admired worldwide and featured in some of the best art collections. It has been exhibited in his native Mexico, Art Basel Miami, London, Madrid, and Tel Aviv.
